About 69% of the population is ethnic Lao, the principal
ethnic group of the country. 8% of the population comprises
of other lowland groups, which together with the Lao
people form the Lao Loum. The Hill people and several
minority cultures of Laos such as the Hmong (Miao),
Yao (Mien), Tai dumm, Dao, Shan, and several Tibeto-Burman
speaking peoples have lived in seclusion in Laos for
years. Hill tribes of mixed origins found in northern
Laos are considered the native inhabitants of Laos.
Today, the Lua people are threatened with extinction.
Even after immigration of the Vietnamese and Chinese
in late 1940's and 1975, several have remained in the
towns.
The religious practices and beliefs are an integral
part of the Culture of Laos. The inhabitants of Laos
are devout followers of Theravada Buddhism. A popular
religion among the mountain tribes, Animism co-exists
with Theravada Buddhism in Laos. A small number of Christians
are found in the Vientiane
area, while the Myanmar border region is home to the
Muslims.
The hammer and sickle is no longer the state symbol
which has been replaced by the gilded stupa of Pha That
Luang. Animism still has a profound influence, especially
during the baasii ceremony. Culture of Laos prescribes
the attire to be worn by women which comprises of a
distinctive phaa sin, a long, patterned skirt. Art,
cuisine, dance and theater, festivals and music of Laos
add vibrancy to the culture of Laos. Almost everything
that shape the Culture of Laos from language to temple,
art, literature and performing arts have been influenced
by Theravada Buddhism. But the popular Laotian music
however precedes Theravada Buddhism.

Luang Prabang and Wat Phou are the most important tourist
destinations. Designated as world heritage sites, Luang
Prabang and Wat Phou sightseeing tours are all about
