About 69% of the population is ethnic Lao, the principal ethnic group of the country. 8% of the population comprises of other lowland groups, which together with the Lao people form the Lao Loum. The Hill people and several minority cultures of Laos such as the Hmong (Miao), Yao (Mien), Tai dumm, Dao, Shan, and several Tibeto-Burman speaking peoples have lived in seclusion in Laos for years. Hill tribes of mixed origins found in northern Laos are considered the native inhabitants of Laos. Today, the Lua people are threatened with extinction. Even after immigration of the Vietnamese and Chinese in late 1940's and 1975, several have remained in the towns.

The religious practices and beliefs are an integral part of the Culture of Laos. The inhabitants of Laos are devout followers of Theravada Buddhism. A popular religion among the mountain tribes, Animism co-exists with Theravada Buddhism in Laos. A small number of Christians are found in the Vientiane area, while the Myanmar border region is home to the Muslims.

The hammer and sickle is no longer the state symbol which has been replaced by the gilded stupa of Pha That Luang. Animism still has a profound influence, especially during the baasii ceremony. Culture of Laos prescribes the attire to be worn by women which comprises of a distinctive phaa sin, a long, patterned skirt. Art, cuisine, dance and theater, festivals and music of Laos add vibrancy to the culture of Laos. Almost everything that shape the Culture of Laos from language to temple, art, literature and performing arts have been influenced by Theravada Buddhism. But the popular Laotian music however precedes Theravada Buddhism.
